The FoMPC has received a Green Links Grant to conduct the Infill Revegetation & Biolinking along Moonee Ponds Creek Project in 2024-2026. This project has the support of Merri-bek City Council, Melbourne Water, local residents and public land owners. The project falls under the targeted funding or waterways in the Birrarung/Yarra and Tributaries areas. It aims to remove invasive weeds and revegetate about 0.25Ha of Creek land, as well as mobilise volunteer resources for planting, weeding and watering activities. Dates for community participation will be announced in 2025 through the FoMPC website and Facebook page.
The FoMPC has been a happy collaborator and participant throughout the John Street Community Planting project. In August 2024 a community event at John Street, Oak Park, was the culmination of 13 years of work by local residents and Merri-bek City Council. This event saw the conversion of the site to a neighbourhood open space reserve – with beds of native plants, an open grassy area, labyrinth, informal seating and a path linking to the Moonee Ponds Creek embankment. To read more about the John Street, Oak Park story, see the articles in the Ponderings newsletter (Issue 84, Page 7-8 & Issue 73, page 19)
The FoMPC is part of a working group involving environment and community groups across Moonee Valley that has been established to plan the Nature Corridor Collaboration (The Corridor CoLaB) Project. The plan is to put actions in place so that Napier Park and Moonee Ponds Creek are healthy and connected. Over the next 6 months residents who live between Napier Park and Moonee Ponds Creek will be invited to be involved in the project. You can find out more and how to become involved through the Moonee Valley Sustainability website.
